“I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.“ – Revelation 2:2-4 (emphasis mine).
American Church…we are in danger of leaving our first love.
My heart has been so burdened lately by watching the American Church rip itself to shreds over earthly things. Masks or no masks? Government conspiracy or nothing at all? Defending black lives suddenly means I’m a communist and a Marxist? Defending babies in the womb means I don’t care about women?
Church, we need to WAKE UP!
Our witness amongst those who don’t know Jesus is invalidated the moment we put our hope in a President over Jesus Christ.
Don’t you realize your party will FAIL you? Maybe not today. Maybe not this year. But blind allegiance will eventually bring you to a fork in the road that will cost you SOMETHING. Will you follow your fellow Republicans/Democrats or will you follow Christ?
Who means more to you?
Christian, at some point, you will need demonstrate love to the immigrants that Republicans consider rapists, murders, and drains to the economy.
Christian, at some point, you’ll need to defend the life of the unborn, the lives Democrats say do not matter.
Eventually, you will need to offend someone because the Gospel is OFFENSIVE by nature.
Will you stand? Or will you cave to the pressures of a political party?
You can not serve two masters.
You can’t serve God AND politics.
Do not distort the Gospel for the sake of political prosperity.
So, what do we do? Where should we as Christians stand?
When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment in the law was, he responded like this:
“Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” – Matthew 22:37-40
What do we do? We LOVE GOD and we LOVE OTHERS. That is what we are commanded to do. There are practical steps we can take to “wake up” from the daze of American Christianity and make sure we don’t lose sight of our first love: Jesus.
- We get rid of our political parties. You are NOT a Republican. You are NOT a Democrat. Biden isn’t your savior. Neither is Trump.
One of my favorite Spurgeon quotes goes like this: “If Christ is not all to you, He is nothing to you. He will never go into partnership as a part Saviour of men. If He be something, He must be everything, and if He be not everything, He is nothing to you.”
Are you living like Jesus is everything? Or are you living like He’s nothing?
- We love our neighbors as ourselves. ALL of them. Jesus provided no caveats to the command to love our neighbor as ourselves. So, whether we agree with them or not, we are called to love our neighbors.
Do your neighbors find your Facebook posts loving? Or are you disparaging them because they disagree with you?Loving someone as yourself seems complicated, but it’s really not.
Would you like someone to unfairly judge you and make assumptions about you because of how you look? No. Guess what? Black people don’t enjoy it either. Loving your black neighbor means fighting for them when racists systems target them.
Would you like someone to deem you worthless because you are inconvenient? No. Guess what? Your unborn neighbors do not want to murdered either. Loving your unborn neighbors means fighting for them and being a voice.
The list goes on and on, but the point remains the same. How would YOU like to be treated? Answer that question, then go treat others in that same manner.
- Check out the And Campaign. Trust me, we’re not alone in this fight for Biblical Value and Social Justice.
- Finally, take a step back and be honest with yourself. The Bible says in Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
Despite this, many of us act like the people we disagree with are the real enemies.
If there is someone you consider an “enemy”, you need to repent. There is no “enemy”. Mind you, there are evil people in this world…but not everyone is “the enemy”. The REAL enemy is Satan. Everyone else still has an opportunity to repent and turn to God. Instead of hounding them on social media and talking about how stupid they are…have you PRAYED for them? Do you put that same energy you use to share memes making fun of them to pray about them?
If not, you need to repent and start praying.
I don’t speak as someone who is perfect. I’ve mentioned this on previous posts, but I grew up as a Republican who thought all Democrats were demonic. Later in life, I became a Democrat who thought all Republicans were demonic. It wasn’t until recently that I realized neither side is the answer: only Jesus is.
But that realization has to go deeper than just how your described on your voter registration.
How are you described by your neighbors, the ones you are called to love as yourself?
Would they call you loving, joyful, peaceful, forbearing, kind, good, and faithful (the fruits of the spirit in Galatians 5)? Or would they describe you as an idolator, hateful, loving discord, jealous, prone to fits of rage, full of selfish ambition, a part of dissensions and factions (some of the acts of the flesh)?
How do YOU love your neighbor?
American Church…we are in danger, but it’s never too late to turn around and boldly approach the throne of GRACE (Hebrews 4:16).
Brothers and Sisters, let’s live in a way that would show the world that there is a BETTER King: Jesus Christ.
Grace & Peace,
